High temperature, Sahara dust clouds to grip Greece

Greece is bracing for a wave of summer heat and a fresh bout of Saharan dust clouds beginning Wednesday.

Experts forecast temperatures will soar to over 30 degrees Celsius in the western regions of the country. By Friday, the southern parts of Greece will

face scorching heat, with temperatures shooting well over 36 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists warn that rising temperatures will be coupled with a fresh sweep of African dust clouds expected to increase particle matters in the atmosphere significantly. The intensity and frequency of the toxic mix marks a stark contrast to previous years, experts say.

ERT meteorologist Nikoleta Ziakopoulou has warned of “the strong and persistent presence of dust in the atmosphere” – a toxic mix that could pose a health hazard for people suffering from chronic respiratory problems, including asthma.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillias has identified two distinct spikes in the dust concentration, urging vulnerable groups to take extra precautions.
